• Breaking isolation, sharing memories and contributing to everyone’s wellness
Oct 09, 2018

The FNQLHSSC was present at the gathering of Innu and Naskapi elders from Quebec and Labrador

The idea of creating this gathering was born in 1995 during a meeting of social services workers from the Innu communities. This movement, which was smaller in its early days, now brings together nearly 500 Innu and Naskapi elders from Quebec and Labrador. In 2010, the Labrador Innu joined the gathering, as they also felt a great need to break the isolation, share their memories and contribute to everyone’s wellness.

This summer, in addition to featuring tents, the smell of fir trees, laughter and discussions, the gathering held in Pessamit made it possible to bring to the fore wellness, social participation as well as the fight against elder abuse. It was also a great opportunity to share the different cultural facets of knowledge and the practice of traditional medicine, which are specific to each community.

In addition, during the event, participants were invited to participate in workshops and conferences on ways to preserve their physical, moral and psychological well-being.

Next year, the 25th gathering will be held in Sept-Îles. The community of Uashat will host this great gathering in 2019.
