Membership Solicitation for the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI)

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is an external advisory body to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). NACI provides PHAC with ongoing and timely medical, scientific, and public health advice relating to the prevention of infection and disease through vaccination and the use of certain prophylactic agents (e.g. immunoglobulin) for humans.

NACI members include experts in a number of disciplines essential to the development of recommendations and the provision of advice on vaccination, including but not limited to: paediatric infectious diseases, adult infectious diseases, allergy, immunology, pharmacology, microbiology, public health and preventive medicine, nursing, economic evaluations and epidemiology.

NACI is comprised of voting members, liaison and ex-officio representatives. A voting membership term on NACI is 4 years, with the possibility of renewing for an additional 1 to 4 years.

PHAC is inviting individuals with relevant expertise, experience and designations to submit their nomination to fill the following on the NACI voting member panel: 

  • Expert / specialist in pharmacology (to fill immediately)
  • Public Health and Preventive Medicine Specialist (to be filled for June 2021)

Due to current circumstance with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NACI meetings are being held virtually, on an as and when required basis. NACI usually meets face-to-face three times per year for two days and additionally via teleconference and WebEx as required. The face-to-face meetings are also usually held in Ottawa, Ontario. Members are expected to attend the face-to-face meetings, unless exceptional circumstances arise. Members are also expected to be actively involved in NACI activities by chairing and participating on working groups, participating in the review and updating of Canadian Immunization Guide chapters, reviewing literature, drafting and reviewing documents, and taking part in discussions and voting processes.

Meeting expenses for NACI voting members, including transportation, accommodations, and meals are paid for by the Public Health Agency of Canada in accordance with the Government of Canada Travel Directive (https://www.njc-cnm.gc.ca/directive/d10/en ).

Interested candidates must submit the following items:

  1. A current curriculum vitae, which includes articles, presentations, research activities and full contact details (mailing address, telephone number and email address);
  2. A cover letter, not exceeding 1000 words,providing details on your experience and expertise related to vaccines/vaccine preventable diseases, experience leading scientific/technical or policy-related committees or working groups, and area(s) of interest relating to vaccines / vaccination; and
  3. At least one letter of recommendation from a person(s) not employed by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Candidates will be assessed on:

  • Depth and breadth of expertise and experience as it relates to NACI’s mandate;
  • Depth and breadth of expertise and experience related to vaccines / vaccination;
  • Experience working with NACI and/or committees with a similar structure and role.

A review of all submissions and the appointment of new members will be made by PHAC with recommendations from the NACI Chair and Vice-Chair. The appointments will be made by the Vice President, Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Branch. Preference may be given to an applicant with expertise in vaccine public health decision-making at a Provincial/Territorial level. Candidates will be notified of the outcomes of the process in writing.
