{"id":26357,"date":"2026-06-09T16:33:51","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T20:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/a-powerful-new-report-on-obstetric-and-gynecological-violence-among-first-nations-women-in-quebec\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T16:36:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T20:36:48","slug":"a-powerful-new-report-on-obstetric-and-gynecological-violence-among-first-nations-women-in-quebec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/en\/a-powerful-new-report-on-obstetric-and-gynecological-violence-among-first-nations-women-in-quebec\/","title":{"rendered":"A Powerful New Report on Obstetric and Gynecological Violence Among First Nations Women in Quebec"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To give a voice to First Nations women and continue documenting their realities, research on obstetric and gynecological violence (OGV) has entered a second phase.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first report, published in 2022 and entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/en\/produit\/free-and-informed-consent-and-imposed-sterilizations-among-first-nations-and-inuit-women-in-quebec\/?_gl=1*30hmrw*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTg3MTEyMjEzMS4xNzc4NjE1MjM1*_ga_906VEPXQGV*czE3Nzg2MTUyMzQkbzEkZzEkdDE3Nzg2MTUyMzkkajU1JGwwJGgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Free and informed consent and imposed sterilizations among First Nations and Inuit women in Quebec<\/a>,\u201d demonstrated that imposed sterilizations were performed on First Nations and Inuit women in Quebec. A total of 35 testimonies were collected, 22 of which reported imposed sterilizations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 26, the FNQLHSSC, in collaboration with the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec en Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue (UQAT), published a second report denouncing these practices, entitled \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/files.cssspnql.com\/s\/11gjS2Xcotjadzn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obstetric and Gynecological Violence and Imposed Sterilizations Among First Nations Women in Quebec \u2013 Phase II<\/a><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on 97 testimonies, the second report documents three times more acts of violence than the Phase I report and demonstrates the systemic nature of these practices. Four types of OGV were identified, among which imposed sterilizations remain the most prevalent with 55 reported cases.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26181\" style=\"width:404px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F.jpg 800w, https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cssspnql.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C0957-F-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key findings include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Indigenous and non-Indigenous women are treated differently, but this treatment is very similar from one nation and region to another, demonstrating the presence of systemic racism and discrimination within the healthcare system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The power dynamic between healthcare staff and First Nations women makes it impossible for women to provide voluntary, prior, and informed consent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among the documented cases of imposed sterilization, many survivors reported not having signed a consent form or not knowing if they had.
