In recent months, Keith Leclaire, a Mohawk from Kahnaw\u00e0:ke and Health Director for the community of Akwesasne since 2017, has left for a much-deserved retirement. We would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to this man who dedicated more than 40 years of his life to improving the health and wellness of First Nations, especially for people with addictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of his career, Mr. Leclaire has held various positions, in addition to having sat on the board of directors of the FNQLHSSC. Director of auxiliary services at the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre in the 1990s, then Director General of the CLSC Naskapi for nearly a decade, he was also Executive Director of the Onen’to:ken Treatment Centre (1986-1991), President of the National Native Association of Treatment Directors (1989-1991), a member of the Quebec Regional Addictions Working Group (1980-1982 and 1997-2004) and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Native Addictions Partnership Foundation (2002-2005).[1]<\/a> He also worked for Health Canada and the Assembly of First Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recognition for his leadership, Mr. Leclaire received an award in 2019 from the First Nations Health Managers Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, here are a few words about Keith Leclaire from Derek Montour, President of the FNQLHSSC Board of Directors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would first like to acknowledge that it was actually Keith who gave me the encouragement to even sit as a member of the Board, let alone his encouragement and faith that I can act as an effective the President for the Board; thank you Keith for all your wisdom that you shared with me personally. That is the one common factor that I suspect that anyone who has met Keith can say; he was always encouraging others to succeed. Whether it was in the organization he was working in, with other Health Managers at the regional tables or in the First Nations Health Managers Association, or whether it was in his own community or in those communities who \u2018adopted\u2019 him for a short while; he always offers words of encouragement and praise. We will miss Keith around the tables when we meet with \u2018government\u2019; he was always quick to point out historical knowledge, quick to identify key points for discussion, firm in his advocacy of First Nations\u2019 rights and always enthusiastic in the belief we can do it ourselves. This confidence he exuded helped others find their own courage and determination. Keith has sat in so many seats, shared so much important knowledge and listened to so many agreements that I suspect we will all feel his absence at our meetings in a profound way. We are grateful for your presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keith has chosen to take a break from the work life we all know and he is pursuing his dreams in a different way. He certainly deserves it! On behalf the entire FNQLHSSC team, especially the Board of Directors and other Health Directors, we wish you peace, serenity, laughter, health and happiness, my friend. Take care Keith and we hope to see you soon in happy times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
