In order to adapt to new concepts of gender in society and avoid discrimination, it is suggested to use&nbsp;neutral&nbsp;wording (gender-inclusive writing) or,&nbsp;when this is not possible, to ensure that there is a balance&nbsp;in men and women representation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some basic&nbsp;guidelines<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;for more inclusive writing&nbsp;that are not cumbersome. Note that&nbsp;simply&nbsp;stating&nbsp;from the outset&nbsp;that the masculine is used&nbsp;for the purpose of brevity&nbsp;is not adequate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Omit courtesy titles<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Omit the courtesy title (e.g.,&nbsp;Mr., Mrs., Ms.)&nbsp;when&nbsp;writing to or about a&nbsp;specific person.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li><strong>Use gender-inclusive nouns<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Use neutral nouns that do not specify gender:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Spouse (instead of&nbsp;\u201chusband\u201d&nbsp;or&nbsp;\u201cwife\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><li>person (instead of&nbsp;\u201cman\u201d&nbsp;or&nbsp;\u201cwoman\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, avoid nouns formed from the word&nbsp;\u201cman\u201d&nbsp;and nouns with feminine endings:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>police officer (instead of&nbsp;\u201cpoliceman\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>humanity (instead of&nbsp;\u201cmankind\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><li>proprietor (instead of&nbsp;\u201cproprietress\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><li>property owner (instead of&nbsp;\u201clandlady\u201d)&nbsp;<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li><strong>Use gender-inclusive pronouns<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Use second person (you) instead of third person (he; she; he or she):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Send your application (instead of&nbsp;\u201cThe applicant must send his or her application\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Use plural nouns or pronouns with&nbsp;\u201cthey\u201d&nbsp;or one of its forms:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Applicants must send their application by December 31 (instead of&nbsp;\u201cThe applicant must send his or her application by December 31\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>All of the graduates must wear caps and gowns if they wish to attend the ceremony (instead of&nbsp;\u201cEvery graduate must wear a cap and a gown if he or she wishes to attend the ceremony\u201d)&nbsp;<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li><strong>Eliminate the pronoun<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Replace a possessive pronoun with an article:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Each applicant must send the application (instead of&nbsp;\u201cEach applicant must send his or her application\u201d)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat the noun:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A teacher can provide instruction to students even after the teacher\u2019s official class hours have ended (instead of&nbsp;\u201cA teacher can provide instruction to students even after his or her official class hours have ended\u201d)&nbsp;<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li><strong>Use the singular \u201cthey\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The plural pronoun&nbsp;\u201cthey\u201d&nbsp;or one of its forms is often used in speech and informal writing to refer to a singular non-specific noun or indefinite pronoun:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Every member has paid their due.&nbsp;<\/li><li>I checked with everyone, and they have all finished their work.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is growing acceptance for singular&nbsp;\u201cthey\u201d&nbsp;in formal writing; and if none of the guidelines above fit the writing situation, singular&nbsp;\u201cthey\u201d&nbsp;may be the only practical solution for gender-inclusive writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All efforts, both written and oral, can help provide a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is inclusive writing?
