In September 2004, the provincial Premiers met with the national Aboriginal chiefs to discuss common projects for bridging the gap between Aboriginal people\u2019s health and the health of other Canadians. Based on the strategy directions decided upon at that meeting, the Canadian government announced new investments for measures, including the Aboriginal Health Transition Fund (AHTF). The AHTF consisted of a five-year project for allowing governments and Aboriginal communities to develop new ways for adapting and integrating existing health services in order to better meet the needs f First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis, including those living off-reserve and in urban centres.
\nA new investment was announced in 2011, namely the Health Services Integration Fund (HSIF), with the objective to improve the integration of health systems on behalf of the Aboriginal population in Canada.
\nThe HSIF is intended to bring about sustainable changes to systems by way of major projects (e.g., those at the provincial or territorial level, or at the level of Regional Health Authorities (RHA) or the region), to promote the collective participation of First Nations in the planning and delivery of health services. The AHTF has taught us that whereas projects it has sponsored have brought about positive results, then even more significant gains have been realized by projects of wider scope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
