An initiative by Table Miro in Wemotaci
Table Miro’s mission is to rally local and external partners, along with the community of Wemotaci at large, around a common goal: improving the living conditions of community members in a way that respects Atikamekw values and cultural identity.
In response to local food insecurity issues, Table Miro members had the idea to implement a temporary solution for vulnerable people in the community. This involved serving hot meals roughly three times a week to 75 people. The meals give low-income people a way to reduce their grocery costs. The initiative also helps give the families of some seniors a break from meal preparation. The hot meal service is also offered to those in isolation due to COVID-19.
The special project was developed in collaboration with the employability project Mikinak and will create jobs. Five employees will take turns to help the cook with meal preparation and receive compensation for their work.
In addition to providing hot meals, Table Miro offers tokens that can be exchanged for food at the grocery store. Interested families can request this service from the Table Miro coordinator as needed.
Hats off to Table Miro and Wemotaci for their excellent work in food security. You are an inspiration!
