We inform First Nations communities and organizations about the principles and application of the Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families, which has been in effect since January 1, 2020. In addition to confirming the rights and jurisdiction of Indigenous peoples in child and family services matters, the Act puts forward important principles, such as the priority of preventive care, the best interests of the child and substantive equality.
Our team monitors the application of the Act and coordinates the work of a committee of experts that is responsible for facilitating its implementation in Quebec. We also ensure communication between the governments of Quebec and Canada and the First Nations.
