Where are we with the health and social services governance process?

Contextualization

The governance process is a collective approach that aims to redefine the current governance structure so that First Nations can take over responsibilities that are currently held by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) in the area of health and social services using a new governance model that will allow First Nations to take over health and wellness services that are intended for them.

This process therefore aims to develop the autonomy of First Nations in Quebec. The governance process is now in its third phase, which particularly consists of continuing the work and presenting a final model to the Chiefs of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) by March 2023.

Regional meeting held on December 15, 2021

This half-day virtual meeting made it possible to welcome several First Nations communities and organizations to pursue three objectives:

  • Continue the co-development work on the new health and wellness governance model.
  • Present the work progress and an update on the elements of the environment that influence the governance process.
  • Improve the work concerning the service offer of the future regional body and guide the continuation of the work.

Workshops in sub-groups allowed participants to continue their reflection and take another step towards the development of the new health and wellness governance model. The summary report of the meeting will soon be available on the governance process website: https://gouvernance.cssspnql.com/en/.

Current work

Work aimed at making the organizational chart of the new regional body more concrete will serve to define the services that the regional health and wellness body should offer to communities and organizations following the transfer of responsibilities from ISC. This is a first step in the process of defining and assessing the importance of services, and additional co-development activities with First Nations communities and organizations will be carried out.

Community tour

The community tour will continue throughout the spring and the coming months. The goal is for the communities to have a common understanding of the governance process and to address their concerns and questions on the subject.
