First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle – class action compensation update
On July 26, 2023, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) issued a letter-decision announcing the approval of the revised Final Settlement Agreement. The landmark agreement, totalling more than $23 billion, will compensate more than 300,000 First Nations children and families who experienced discrimination through the First Nations Child and Family Services Program and the narrow application of Jordan’s Principle. On August 16, 2023, the Federal Court of Canada extended the deadline for class members to opt out of the class action until October 6, 2023. Read the decision here.

Funding opportunities for master’s and PhD students
QC-NEIHR invites you to participate in its annual graduate scholarship competition. The objective of the graduate scholarship program is to promote the development of research skills and contribute to the training of Indigenous (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) master’s and PhD students enrolled in a Quebec institution.
Specifically, the QC-NEIHR graduate scholarships are worth:
- Between $17,500 and $25,000 per year for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of renewal for master’s (graduate) scholarships.
- Between $20,000 and $35,000 per year for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a PhD (postgraduate) scholarship.
You have until 11:59 p.m. on September 30, 2023, to apply. (Only available in French)
Call for projects under the Programme d’aide financière aux infrastructures récréatives, sportives et de plein air (PAFIRSPA)
The Ministère de l’Éducation has launched a call for projects for the two components of the financial assistance program for recreational, sports and outdoor infrastructure (PAFIRSPA). Under this program, municipalities, non-profit organizations, solidarity cooperatives, schools and higher education institutions as well as First Nations and Inuit bodies can submit projects. They can receive up to 66% of eligible costs, up to a maximum of $20 million for sports and recreational infrastructure (component 1) and $200,000 for outdoor infrastructure (component 2).
- To apply for financial assistance under component 1 (sports and recreational infrastructure), the applicant must submit the online form no later than 4:30 p.m. on December 5, 2023.
- To apply for financial assistance under component 2 (outdoor infrastructure), the applicant must submit the online form no later than 4:30 p.m. on November 6, 2023.

RéQEF excellence scholarships The RéQEF has launched its excellence scholarship competitions for the year 2023-2023. This year, the RéQEF is renewing the research admission competition for Indigenous or racialized master’s students, in addition to the PhD admission competition for Indigenous or racialized students. You have until midnight on September 15, 2023, to apply (French only).

The Tahatikonhsontóntie’ experienceships are here
Tahatikonhsontóntie’ QC-NEIHR is launching experienceships, a new type of scholarship to support the transmission of traditional knowledge. Four pairs of mentors and mentees will be funded each year. The experienceships will be awarded to knowledge keepers or elders recognized for their specific skills or knowledge and learners seeking to acquire this knowledge. Ideally, the training should be practical and in person, taking place on the land or in the community. You have until 11:59 p.m. on September 30, 2023, to apply.
26es journées annuelles de santé publique (26th annual public health days) On November 27 and 28, the 26th annual public health days will be held at the Québec City Convention Centre. With more than 24 activities, this 26th edition addresses the need for sharing and diversifying expertise to broaden the scope of action for public health and well-being. An online session will also be held on November 29.

Participation in the succession competition or in posted communications If you are finishing your master’s degree in health this year, it’s not too late to submit a video (French only) of your master’s project for a chance to win free registration to the annual public health days. Deadline: September 22, 2023, at midnight.
IUJD/CRUJEF scientific days On November 23 and 24, the Omni Mont-Royal Hotel in Montreal will host scientific days on various promising and proven practices focused on the well-being of children from 0 to 12 years of age. Call for intersectoral action experiences for health equity The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is issuing a call to identify and collect national, subnational, and local experiences of intersectoral action that have directly or indirectly contributed to health equity. The proposal submission period will be open from 8 September to 8 October 2023.
