Over the past few months, First Nations have regularly made headlines. Here are a few examples: the Val‐d’Or crisis, the initiative on “the link between the living conditions of Aboriginal women and sexual assault and spousal violence,”1 the inquiry on missing or murdered Aboriginal girls and women or the decision rendered by the Canadian Human Rights Commission stating that the federal government is discriminating against First Nation children under the care of the Youth Protection Directorate. Granted that this increased media coverage sensitizes the general public and political authorities to the living conditions of the First Nations in Quebec, it also highlights the need to pursue the fight against poverty and social exclusion in order to eliminate systemic discrimination.
